Oscar 2019 is the first time a blockbuster superhero competes for the Best Picture.

Eight films nominated for Best Picture at Oscar 2019 include Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, Favorite, Green Book, Roma, A Star Is Born and Vice. Thanks to Black Panther’s $700 million, the total North American sales of superhero kind of movie is up to 26 billion.

Roma – the film that received 10 Oscar nominations this year – is only released via Netflix and almost unavailable at theaters. Bohemian Rhapsody and many other films are still being shown at theaters. Therefore, this group of film type is still capable of surpassing the $1.35 billion revenue record of Oscar 2011.

The comments

Rotten Tomatoes is one of eight nominees for Best Picture. Bohemian Rhapsody and Vice are the two most critically acclaimed names, with only 62% and 64% positive reviews, respectively. On the other hand, up to 97% of the comments about the Black Panther are positive. A lower rated film is Roma (96%), BlackKklansman (95%), and The Favorite (93%).

Up to 5 out of 8 works of Best Picture this year have the appearance of characters from the LGBTQ community. Throughout the last two years, Oscar-winning films are Moonlight (2016) and The Shape of Water (2017), both of which have gay characters.

Along with The Favorite, Roma leads the Oscar nomination list 2019 when being nominated in 10 categories. This is the second time in history that a foreign-language work is nominated in so many categories by the Academy Awards.

The heaviest nominee

The Black Panther is Marvel Studios in particular and the first superhero film was first nominated for Oscar’s Best Feature Film. This was a great success for Marvel Studios. If Black Panther wins the Best Picture, it will mark the first time a superhero movie can do this. Let’s wait to see!
