Viewpoints about graffiti arts

Nowadays, graffiti pictures on the walls around the city have become the spiritual property.

In the past, when it came to graffiti, many Westerners would immediately think of guys wearing hoodie shirts, hand-painted bottles, swearing and sabotaging the landscape with rebellious messages. It was around the 1970s, when the antiwar movement was strong. Protesters, young people, choose to spray angry statements against the government on the wall. Most passersby didn’t bother with the messy messages written on it, others were very angry.

The change of the times

Soon after graffiti appeared, suddenly, the media suddenly changed their attitudes – former graffiti prosecutors were then criticized as conservatives. People were unable to see the true beauty of art. However, graffiti is now evaluated as masterpieces. This is because in the midst of scattering paint colors, there are real artists that appear, the peak is Robert Banks, better known by the more familiar name: Banksy.

Banksy’s artworks became so famous that people were willing to remove the wall he drew, then sold the work at a high price. His success became an inspiration for many other street artists and individuals who collected art works. It was realized that old walls and cellars could also become a platform for creative artists.

An urban art genre

However, before honoring Banksy, modern art advocates have taken actions to show respect for graffiti, and consider it an urban art genre. Since the late 1970s and early 1980s, some street corners in New York such as Houston Street or Bowery have become free spaces for street artists. Some areas in England such as Brixton or Westbourne Grove also allow artists to freely express and record their names.

When young people started to pay attention to the colorful pictures on the wall, it was also time for those working in the media to realize the influence of colorful works that used to seem silly.
